A new initiative to support long-term collection loan partnerships among US museums of all sizes.

The Portland Museum of Art is excited to announce its participation in the Art Bridges Collection Loan Partnership, an innovative art lending model that allows artworks from a diverse group of museums to travel the country. The museum will display an array of American artworks from the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska, which will be on view from August 2022 through Summer 2023. Art Bridges supports museums around the country to share works from their collections with the public, championing art accessibility and diversity.

In alignment with the PMA’s ongoing Art for All mission, the collection will include artworks from American artists of diverse backgrounds. The loans will be displayed throughout the museum’s permanent collection, deepening the conversation throughout the galleries around the complex history of American art. The loans will include works from Jacques Lipchitz, Helen Frankenthaler, Winslow Homer, and John Sloan, among others. The PMA also requested a piece from Kerry James Marshall, which will add a powerful and integral perspective to the collection. The Art Bridges Foundation generously accommodated this request, and Marshall’s work Lost Boys: AKA BB will be on view from August 2022 through November 2022.

“This remarkable group of painting and sculpture from Joslyn Art Museum, ranging from the 19th century to the present day, will offer fresh insight on the Portland Museum of Art’s collection,” says Ramey Mize, Assistant Curator of American Art. “By interweaving these works across the museum, we hope to spark thoughtful forms of engagement around the PMA’s holdings, complementing our strengths while also exploring important questions. We look forward to this invaluable opportunity offered by the Art Bridges Collection Loan Partnership to infuse new energy, curiosity, and focus—often more typical of special exhibitions—throughout our galleries.”

Art Bridges seeks to increase accessibility, representation, and community engagement in the arts.

The Art Bridges Collection Loan Partnership is a new initiative dedicated to bringing American art out of storage and on view into communities across the US. The Program aims to increase works of art by BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and women artists, and to fill gaps in museum collections. Additionally, the program will expand access and increase transparency in the process for borrowing artworks among museums of all sizes.
